Das Kabinette were known mainly for their underground hit The Cabinet, originally released as a 7” single in 1983, and inspired by a the classic silent German expressionistic film, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (its streaming on netflix if you haven’t had the pleasure). So besides that 7”, they never had a proper release, at least until good ol’ Minimal Wave “…made contact with them in 2007 and aside from remastering the 7” single tracks, culled together a collection of unreleased studio tracks. Those were then released in January 2008 as Spy Thriller.”
Spy Killer was originally only pressed to 500 copies on 180g vinyl, and quickly sold out, so I was first introduced to Das Kabinette when The Cabinet was included on the V/A compilation The Minimal Wave Tapes : Volume 1 in 2010. And now apparently due to popular demand, Spy Killer will be released with another 999 copies pressed. Minimal Wave is a gold mine of 80s snyth gems, and besides curating some of the best kept 80s secrets to a new audience, I had no ideal they went to lengths that included tracking down artists and releasing previously unavailable music. My already high respect for the label just went through the roof.
Das Kabinette - Spy Killer LP is available again as a second pressing and Ltd to 999 copies on ultra clear 180g vinyl. The LP is presented in a heavy weight matte die-cut jacket, with printed inner sleeve which shows through the window. Grab yours from Minimal Wave here before they’re gone again.
